West egg was often looked at as new money, and east egg was looked at as old money. Same with the Midwest vs. East. Midwest is considered new money, and the east is considered old money. -CM

In chapter 3, Gatsby claims that he is from the Midwest, but he is really from San Francisco. This makes Nick question the authenticity of his story because San Francisco is obviously not in the Midwest.

There are different mindsets in the regions. In the Midwest, people support more traditional ideas and family values. On the east coast, there is more radical thinking and more extravangant parties. -SB
If you look at history. All populations move west. The Wilson's thought of moving west. Gatsby and Daisy were talking about moving west. There was even gossip of Tom and Myrtle moving west and leaving their spouses. -CM
